A SAFER HOME IS BUILT ONE HONEST CONVERSATION AT A TIME
Fall Prevention Week is a reminder—not a reason to panic. Most homes don't need every possible modification at once. They need a thoughtful look at the places where daily routines and the environment aren't working well together.
Start with one route: the bed-to-bathroom path, the shower, or the front entry. Notice what you reach for, where the light disappears, and which transition makes you pause. Small changes can protect independence without making your home feel clinical.

THE FALL-RISK RESET: START WITH THE ROUTE YOU USE EVERY DAY
More than one in four adults age 65 and older reports a fall each year. In Georgia, 25.7% of adults 65+ reported a fall in the most recent state data summarized by America's Health Rankings. Falls are the leading cause of injury for older adults.

20-MINUTE WALKTHROUGH
- 1. Walk from bed to bathroom with the lights off. Add a plug-in night-light or motion lighting where the path disappears.
- 2. Remove or secure loose rugs and check every threshold for a toe-catching edge.
- 3. Test your shower support. A towel bar is not a grab bar, and a suction-cup bar is not a fall-arrest device.
- 4. Stand from the toilet without pulling on a nearby fixture. If that is difficult, note the best location for a properly anchored support.
- 5. Check stair handrails at both ends. A secure rail should extend beyond the first and last step.
- 6. Put frequently used items between hip and shoulder height to reduce reaching and climbing.
MYTH VS. FACT
Myth: You only need a grab bar after a fall. Fact: A well-placed, structurally anchored grab bar can support safer movement before a crisis.
Install Mavens anchors bars into studs or reinforced backing and tests them to 250 pounds.

THE CONVERSATION, THE MEDICATION REVIEW, AND THE BREAK
PRACTICAL: LEAD WITH PARTNERSHIP
Try: “Would you walk through the bathroom with me? I want to make sure the house works well for both of us.” Focus on comfort and independence—not what someone “can't” do.
FINANCIAL: START WITH GEORGIACARES
Georgia SHIP, also called GeorgiaCares, offers free, unbiased Medicare counseling. Call 1-866-552-4464 and select option 4, Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Counselors can help compare plans and understand coverage.
SUPPORT: SCHEDULE THE BREAK
Contact the Atlanta Regional Commission's Empowerline at 404-463-3333 or empowerline.org for aging and caregiver resources, including meals, care management, and respite information.

THREE TOOLS WORTH CONSIDERING—WITHOUT THE SALES PITCH
- Fall-detection wearables: useful when worn and charged. They may miss slow slides and can create false alarms. Ask what happens if the monthly fee lapses.
- Motion-activated path lighting: a low-cost way to make the nighttime route visible. Plug-in models avoid silent battery failure.
- Medication dispensers: can lock doses, sound reminders, and alert a caregiver. Someone still needs to load the device correctly, and it doesn't handle every medication type.
Install Mavens does not sell or earn commission on products mentioned here. We name categories because clients ask, and we include limitations because honest advice matters.

MEDICARE OPEN ENROLLMENT: OCTOBER 15–DECEMBER 7
Review your plan rather than assuming it stayed the same. The 2026 Part D out-of-pocket cap is $2,100, and the standard maximum deductible is $615. Some Medicare Advantage plans may offer home-safety benefits, but coverage varies. Check your Evidence of Coverage or call your plan. CMS details →
VA HISA HOME MODIFICATIONS
Eligible veterans may qualify for medically necessary home modifications through HISA. Lifetime maximums are up to $6,800 for qualifying service-connected needs and up to $2,000 for qualifying non-service-connected needs. Confirm eligibility and current terms through the VA and your VA physician. VA HISA information →
RENTERS AND REASONABLE MODIFICATIONS
Fair Housing protections generally allow reasonable disability-related modifications, including grab bars. Tenants commonly pay in private housing and a landlord may require restoration at move-out. Put requests and restoration terms in writing before work begins. We're contractors, not attorneys or benefits counselors. Confirm program details with the agency or a licensed advisor.

MEDICATION CHANGES CAN AFFECT APPETITE AND BALANCE
Some medications can contribute to dizziness, confusion, dry mouth, or balance changes. Don't stop a prescription on your own. Make a list of medications and supplements, note any new symptoms, and ask a pharmacist or prescriber whether a review is appropriate.
General information only: nutrition needs vary significantly with diabetes, kidney disease, heart failure, and blood thinners. Ask your clinician for a registered dietitian referral when advice needs to be personal.

SHEET-PAN TURKEY AND VEGETABLE BOWLS
A one-pan meal that reheats well and keeps lifting to a minimum.
You need:
1 lb ground turkey, 1 bag frozen peppers and onions, 1 can no-salt-added beans, 1 cup quick-cooking brown rice, 1 tsp smoked paprika, 2 tbsp olive oil.
You do:
Cook rice according to package directions. Toss turkey, vegetables, beans, paprika, and oil on a sheet pan. Roast at 400°F until turkey reaches 165°F, about 20–25 minutes. Serve over rice.
Time: 35 minutes · Serves: 4 · Sodium: varies by brands; choose no-salt-added ingredients and check labels.
Easier-hands tip: Use pre-cut vegetables and a lightweight sheet pan. A rocker knife can make portioning easier.

ASK FOR A HOME SAFETY EVALUATION
Say to the doctor: “I would like a referral for an occupational therapy home safety evaluation.” An OT looks at how a specific person moves through their own home. That information helps families prioritize changes, and Install Mavens can coordinate with a therapist's recommendations at no charge.
OT supports daily activities; PT focuses on strength, balance, walking, and mobility. Both perspectives can help create a safer plan.

“Do I need to change the whole bathroom to make it safer?”
Not necessarily. Start with the task that feels least steady: entering the shower, standing from the toilet, or turning on wet flooring. A targeted change—such as a properly anchored grab bar, shower seat, better lighting, or comfort-height toilet—may be the right first step.
A free virtual assessment can help you decide what deserves attention now and what can wait.
